Rievaulx Abbey from last week. Set in a remote valley in the North York Moors National Park, Rievaulx is a former Cistercian abbey. It was one of the wealthiest abbeys in England until it was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1538. At that time there were reported to be 72 buildings, occupied by an abbot and 21 monks who were attended to by 102 servants. Its a fairly large site which also includes cloisters, dormitories, an infirmary, a refectory, a meeting house, bathrooms …… It's a lovely place to spend an afternoon if you're ever in the area!
